How do you choose a personal injury law firm?

Personal references and referrals. A relative, friend, fellow employer, physician or other acquaintance is the best source of information about an attorney.

Experience: Personal injury and medical malpractice cases require experience and procedure that must be followed in the courtroom and the skill required to effectively present your case to a jury.  Find out what experience the attorney has in the courtroom.  An attorney who has extensive trial experience and successful results will also obtain the best settlements because of his reputation and abilities.

Attorney qualifications. There are state, national and international trial attorney organizations in which membership is by nomination and invitation only. The factor considered for membership include the attorney’s trial experience and results, the recommendations of other attorneys and judges before whom the attorney has appeared, and his reputation for honesty and integrity.  Those organizations include the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, American College of Trial Lawyers, American Board of Advocates and the Indiana College of Fellows.

Accessibility of the attorney. Your expectations are that your care will be handled by an attorney you hire not his paralegal or an associate and that you will communicate directly with him or her throughout your case. Determine if this is how the firm you are considering operates or whether they are simply organized to resolve your case as quickly as possible through paralegals and associates.
